With a good structure you bring order in the information, from which you construct your bachelor thesis – we explain to you, how this works best.
The basic structure of the structure of a bachelor thesis is divided into the introduction, the main part and the conclusion and follows a fixed Bachelor thesis structure. The complete bachelor thesis, however, consists of ten sections, all of which are subject to their own specifications. You also have to create the cover sheet or attachment of the BA according to certain guidelines. In addition to the right structure, a logical structure of your bachelor thesis is essential. It later serves not only as a table of contents, but is also a kind of short exposé for your complete thesis. You will find out in this article how to build up the ten sections of your bachelor thesis correctly and how to design a structure for the bachelor thesis in only two steps.
Structure of the bachelor thesis in 10 sections
Each bachelor thesis structure roughly consists of three parts:
- In the introduction (about 10%) of your bachelor thesis, it’s all about which research question you want to answer and to what extent it is relevant for your area of expertise. In addition, you describe in a few sentences the structure of your work.
- The majority (about 80%) covers most of your bachelor thesis. On the one hand you present the theoretical knowledge, on the other hand you describe your applied methodology for the investigation of your question and present your research results.
- The conclusion (about 10%) includes the resume of your thesis, in which you logically summarize your results and evaluate in a final conclusion.
- In addition to this basic structure of introduction, main section and conclusion, the construction of a bachelor thesis consists of further building blocks, which are based on a given structure. Overall, the construction of a bachelor thesis has ten sections, which we will explain in more detail below.
The cover page is at the forefront in the structure of your bachelor thesis and includes the following information:
- Name of your university
- Name of your department or chair
- Name of your degree program
- Title of your work
- Names and titles of your first and second supervisors
- Your first and last name
- matriculation number
If necessary, your phone number for the purpose of fast communication with your supervisors
Within the bachelor’s thesis structure, the layout of your cover page is the first that your reviewers get to see from your bachelor thesis. Scripts or playful text types are taboo! You can use the logo of your university whenever it is officially approved by your university and has a print resolution of at least 200 to 300 dpi. You should avoid pixelated logos in low print resolution.
In the structure of your thesis, the table of contents of the bachelor thesis is just behind the cover page and shows the structure of your bachelor thesis. In addition to a first overview of the essential aspects of your thesis, it should above all provide guidance and and recognize the red thread of your bachelor thesis. The table of contents contains all chapters and subchapters, but should by no means be too deeply structured in order to maintain clarity. As a rule of thumb, you can remember: do not divide more than three levels!
List of abbreviations
All abbreviations that you use in your Bachelor thesis, you have to explain in a separate list of abbreviations. This includes all technical terms that are not common knowledge. Common terms such as “eg.” or “etc.” have lost nothing in the list of abbreviations. The terms that need not be explained include bibliographic information such as “Ed.” (Publisher) or “Bd.” (Tape). In principle, use as few shortcuts as possible to avoid frequent page turns!
List of illustrations and tables
In the list of figures, all illustrations, such as As graphics, drawings and tables of your bachelor thesis are listed separately from each other. The list of figures (numbering with, for example, the preceding “Fig.”) And the list of tables (numbering with, for example, the preceding “Tab.”) Must be created separately with their own headings. The order in both directories must match the order of appearance in your bachelor thesis. It is also important that the title and the numbering in the body text are identical to those in the list of figures or table index.
In the introduction to the bachelor thesis, you will present the bachelor thesis topic you are working on and what question you want to answer with your thesis. The introduction should make the reader especially curious and provide in a few sentences an overview of the problem and your approach to the solution. You also explain in a few sentences the structure of your thesis. Attention: Based on the introduction, the examiner usually already determines the rough classification of your note!
The main part gets the biggest place in the structure of your bachelor thesis. Here you lead to the question and describe your approaches to solving the problem. Particularly important is the subdivision into comprehensible and successive sections. On the one hand you present the necessary theoretical knowledge for the understanding of your question, on the other hand you describe your own methodology and your research results. You must always mark direct and indirect citations and provide references to corresponding sources.
Conclusion / conclusion
The final part in the bachelor thesis builds up a summary of the results of your thesis and evaluates them in the conclusion of your bachelor thesis. Here you should not call any new information, but rather clarify conclusively: Was the research question satisfactorily answered or are further investigations possibly necessary?
The bibliography of the bachelor thesis lists all the sources to which you refer in your work. The bibliography should be sorted alphabetically and by type of text. Attention: For every type of source, such as As monographs or anthologies there are exact requirements for inclusion in the bibliography, which you must stick to!
Directory of the Annex
The attachment list is in the bachelor thesis structure at the very end and lists all actual attachments such. B. self-created questionnaires or analysis data attached to the bachelor thesis.
In the appendix of your bachelor thesis you have the possibility to present those materials, which are not necessarily required for the understanding of the text, but which you nevertheless would like to present in detail, eg. Eg questionnaires whose results have been used in the text or analysis data underlying the work.
